TMS Tiles
TMS (Tile Map Service) layers connect tiled raster imagery that uses the TMS row order. Use TMS for historic maps, scanned plans, aerial imagery, and other cached tile services that publish a tilemapresource.xml file or a {z}/{x}/{reverseY} tile URL template.
Connecting a TMS layer
- Open the Layers panel and click Add URL.
- Choose TMS as the layer type.
- Enter either the service URL or the tile URL template.
- Optionally enter an attribution string that credits the data provider.
- Click Add layer.
AugmentCity accepts two TMS connection formats:
| Format | Example | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
Service root or tilemapresource.xml URL | https://example.com/tiles/ or https://example.com/tiles/tilemapresource.xml | Use this when the service publishes TMS metadata. AugmentCity reads the service bounds, level range, and tiling profile from the metadata. |
| Raw tile template | https://example.com/tiles/{z}/{x}/{reverseY}.png | Use this when you only have the tile URL pattern. Templates are treated as Web Mercator tiles. |
If you paste a URL ending in tilemapresource.xml, AugmentCity stores the parent service root and keeps any query parameters needed by the service.
URL template format
TMS tile templates must include these placeholders:
| Placeholder | Meaning |
|---|---|
{z} | Zoom level |
{x} | Tile column |
{reverseY} | TMS tile row |
Example:
https://tiles.example.com/historic/{z}/{x}/{reverseY}.png
Use {reverseY} for TMS. A template that uses {y} is an XYZ tile layer, not a TMS layer.
Service metadata
When the service publishes tilemapresource.xml, AugmentCity reads the metadata before adding the layer when the browser can access it. This lets the layer use the service's own:
- Geographic bounds
- Minimum and maximum tile levels
- Mercator or geodetic tiling profile
If the metadata probe is blocked by CORS, you can still add the explicit TMS connection. The layer then loads directly in the viewer, and any malformed metadata or unsupported profile is shown as a layer load error.
Attribution
Enter the attribution text required by your tile provider. This is displayed in the viewer while the layer is visible.
Working with TMS layers
TMS layers behave like other imagery layers in AugmentCity:
- They appear in the Imagery category in the Layers panel.
- You can rename, reorder, show, hide, and adjust opacity.
- Their state is saved in scenario snapshots.
- They can be included in share links and published to the Public Dataset Catalog without copying the remote imagery.
- They support Split View for swipe comparisons.
Limitations
- TMS layers are raster imagery only. They do not contain selectable vector features or attributes.
- Raw tile templates use Web Mercator only.
- The service must be publicly accessible or reachable from the user's browser.
- Authenticated services, custom bounds, tile sizes, extensions, and manual zoom controls are not currently configured in the TMS dialog.
